Recall:
After studying the unit,
stop and put what you have learned
into your own words

Digest:
Go back to what you did not understand and
reconsider the information;
Contact external expert sources (e.g., other books or an instructor) if you
still cannot understand

Expand:
In this step, ask
three kinds of questions concerning the
studied material:

If I could speak to the author, what questions would I ask or what
criticism would I offer?

How could I apply this material to what I am interested in?

How could I make this information interesting and understandable to
other students?

Review:
Go over the material you've covered,
Review what strategies helped you understand and/or retain information in the
past and apply these to your current studies

This is what I follow while reading academic books. You can try out these tips ;)

Six Tips for effective reading:

Choose a comfortable clutter-free reading zone.
Pay attention to what you are reading. Handle a section at a stipulated time for better focus.
First quickly skim through the content you are going to read to get a rough idea of what you are reading. Don’t ignore the headings and subheadings..
Be specific about what you want to study. Ask yourself a simple question. Why are you reading? Then, start reading keeping in mind what you are looking for.
Mark the important terms or information on your textbook with a highlighter or a pencil for later reference, as you read.
Note down what you learned. Make a list of the important points of what you read (keep it crisp and short) or create a mind map using the important points.

I have been indulging myself whole morning in the US Open Men Quarterfinal match between my all-time favorite Andre Agassi and fellow American James Blake (Agassi look-alike). Two sets down and looking weary, Agassi suddenly regain his touch and went on to win the match to advance in the semis. Quite a mood uplifter for me....
